Gold loans are emerging as one of India's fastest-growing retail credit segments, driven by rising gold prices and increased digital adoption. In a recent thought leadership article, Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan highlighted why gold loans continue to stand out as one of India’s most resilient credit segments during periods of economic uncertainty. He noted that gold-backed lending has emerged as a reliable source of liquidity.
According to industry data cited in the article, outstanding gold loans in India have crossed ₹4 lakh crore, reflecting strong growth in demand. Gold loans have become one of the country’s fastest-growing retail credit products, supported by rising gold prices, digital adoption, and changing borrower preferences.
Mohanan explained that higher gold prices increase the value of collateral, enabling borrowers to access greater funding and lenders to offer top-up loans within RBI-prescribed loan-to-value norms. Digital transformation has further improved customer experience, making gold loans faster, more transparent, and accessible across urban and rural markets.
He also pointed out that tighter regulations on unsecured lending have encouraged more borrowers to opt for secured credit products such as gold loans. As a regulated NBFC, Indel Money remains focused on responsible lending, customer-centric innovation, and expanding formal credit access, reinforcing the role of gold loans in strengthening India’s financial resilience.
In a recent interaction with Outlook India, Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan highlighted the growing importance of gold as a reliable collateral driving India’s next phase of inclusive credit growth. He explained that gold-backed lending is becoming a key financial tool, especially for individuals and small businesses that face challenges in accessing traditional credit systems.
Gold loans are gaining relevance due to their speed, simplicity, and lower dependency on credit history. Mohanan noted that in India, where households hold large quantities of gold, a significant portion remains underutilised. By bringing this idle asset into the formal financial system, lenders can improve liquidity and expand access to credit in both urban and rural markets.
He emphasised that gold loans are particularly beneficial for MSMEs and individuals in smaller towns, where access to formal banking services is limited. The secured nature of gold lending reduces risk for lenders while enabling faster disbursal for borrowers. This makes gold loans an efficient solution during economic uncertainty and tight credit conditions.
As a regulated NBFC, Indel Money is also playing a key role in moving borrowers away from informal lending practices towards a more transparent and customer-first approach.
With gold evolving from a traditional asset into a strategic financial tool, Indel Money stands at the forefront of enabling inclusive and sustainable economic progress.

In an interview with People Manager, Anoop C. Nair, Head of Human Resources at Indel Money, shared how flexibility in NBFCs must go beyond remote work and become a structured, fair, and governance-driven strategy. He explained that in a regulated gold-loan business, people policies must balance RBI compliance, customer trust, and local cultural realities.
According to Nair, flexibility does not mean relaxed controls. At Indel Money, the core values—ethics, compliance, and customer dignity—remain uniform across India, while the implementation adapts to regional needs. The company follows a “standardise the why and what, localise the how” approach, supported by regional councils and policy audits to maintain accountability.
He highlighted micro-flexibility practices such as rotating Saturdays off, role swaps within clusters, work-from-home options for eligible roles, Recharge Leave, and Family Leave. These initiatives are designed to improve retention in a branch-led NBFC environment.
Nair also emphasised that AI should handle routine administrative tasks, allowing managers to focus on mentoring and customer trust. He stressed that employee feedback is treated as a direct decision-making input, ensuring inclusive policy updates across geographies.
The interview outlines how flexible, measurable, and skills-driven HR practices are strengthening engagement, compliance, and long-term workforce resilience at Indel Money.
Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan shared his views on the Union Budget FY27, highlighting its strong focus on foreign investment, financial stability, and long-term economic growth. According to him, the Budget is timely, especially in the context of rupee depreciation, slowing exports, and global trade pressures.
He noted that the government’s efforts to attract foreign capital are visible through tax exemptions for NRIs and Overseas Citizens, along with simplified FEMA rules. The Budget also aims to bring investments from large global corporations by offering customs duty exemptions across key sectors such as aviation components, nuclear power projects, lithium-ion batteries, critical minerals, solar equipment, and electronics manufacturing. These sectors are expected to play a major role in India’s medium-term growth.
On the banking and finance side, Mohanan welcomed the formation of a High-Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat, which is expected to strengthen credit flow to banks, NBFCs, and MSMEs. Treating MSME trade receivables as asset-backed securities is seen as a positive step in easing credit access.
He also highlighted the government’s fiscal discipline, with a reduced fiscal deficit and increased public capital expenditure, which could encourage private investment. The simplified tax regime, support for data centres, bond market reforms, and rationalisation of MAT and STT were described as measures that support compliance, capital markets, and job creation.
In response to the Union Budget 2026, Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan highlighted the positive implications for India’s financial and credit ecosystem. The Budget, presented on February 1, 2026, emphasised long-term strength in banking and financial systems rather than short-term measures. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s proposal to form a High-Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat aims to enhance credit access across sectors, including banking, NBFCs and MSMEs — a step Mohanan described as significant for meeting broader financing needs.
Umesh Mohanan, Executive Director and CEO of Indel Money, said the move could address longstanding funding challenges. “On the banking and finance front, the constitution of a High-level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat is a notable step that will address the credit-financing requirements of banking, NBFC and MSME sectors. For the MSMEs, the trade receivables are now being treated as asset-backed securities, which will help them address their credit requirements,” he said.
Mohanan noted that treating trade receivables as asset-backed securities can help MSMEs meet credit requirements more efficiently, supporting growth and liquidity. He also pointed out the Budget’s clear focus on NBFC reforms, technology adoption and credit disbursement targets, which are expected to make credit flow smoother for borrowers who rely on non-bank financial institutions.
According to the article, these measures are designed to strengthen the foundations of India’s credit delivery system while maintaining financial stability, which could enhance access to formal credit for businesses and retail borrowers alike.
Indel Money has strengthened its growth strategy by securing ₹100 crore (approximately $11 million) in debt funding from Kotak Credit Opportunities Fund. The funding was raised through non-convertible debentures (NCDs) with a tenure of 4.5 years, reflecting strong institutional confidence in the company’s business model, governance, and expansion plans.
According to Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan, the partnership supports the company’s focus on scaling its lending operations and strengthening its position in the organised gold loan sector. The capital will be used primarily for onward lending, helping expand credit access to customers across India.
Indel Money continues to record steady business growth. The company reported a 10% year-on-year rise in net profit to ₹61 crore in FY25, supported by strong loan demand. Assets under management grew 52% year-on-year to ₹2,400 crore, while total disbursements reached approximately ₹6,000 crore during the same period. The company expects disbursements to reach ₹10,000 crore in FY26, with AUM projected to grow to ₹4,000 crore.
Gold loans currently account for nearly 94% of Indel Money’s portfolio, with additional lending support extended to small and medium businesses. Operating across more than 370 branches in 15 states, the company continues to focus on responsible lending, financial inclusion, and customer-focused credit solutions.
Indel Money Executive Director and CEO Umesh Mohanan recently shared insights on the changing role of gold in India during an episode of Simple Hai!, hosted by Vivek Law. The discussion focused on how gold in India is moving beyond tradition and emotion to become a practical financial tool that supports liquidity and inclusion.
India holds nearly 25,000 tonnes of household gold, much of which remains idle. Mohanan explained that global factors such as US economic trends, geopolitical tensions, central bank policies, and rising global debt now influence gold prices more than seasonal domestic demand. These factors have strengthened gold’s position as a stable asset in uncertain times.
He highlighted that only about 15% of household gold enters the gold loan pledge market, and a majority of this is still handled by unregulated moneylenders. Indel Money aims to change this by expanding regulated gold lending in Tier 2 to Tier 5 cities, helping households access safe credit while improving transparency and local economic activity.
Mohanan also spoke about how gold loans have shifted from being a distress option to a lifestyle finance solution used for education, business needs, agriculture, and home improvements. With longer loan tenures, customer education, and strong governance, Indel Money has built a model focused on trust, repayment discipline, and long-term relationships.
The conversation highlighted how structured gold loans are strengthening financial resilience across India.
Umesh Mohanan, Executive Director & CEO of Indel Money, joins Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Vivek Law on the Simple Hai! show to decode the real role of gold in times of crisis and why gold loans work differently from traditional credit.
Mohanan explains how gold continues to act as a reliable store of value, how global factors now drive gold prices, and why trust is central to the gold loan ecosystem.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced major changes to its withdrawal framework under EPFO 3.0, aimed at improving access, speed, and transparency for over seven crore members across India. The revised rules were approved during the 238th meeting of the Central Board of Trustees, chaired by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
Under the new norms, members can withdraw up to 100% of their EPF balance, including both employee and employer contributions, subject to conditions. Thirteen earlier withdrawal rules have been consolidated into three broad categories—essential needs, housing needs, and special circumstances. Education withdrawals are now allowed up to 10 times and marriage withdrawals up to five times, with a minimum service period of 13 months for partial withdrawals. In special cases, members are not required to state reasons, though at least 25% of the balance must remain in the account.
The reforms also introduce automatic claim settlement under the Vishwas Scheme, reduced penal damages for delayed payments, and doorstep Digital Life Certificate services for pensioners.
Commenting on the update, Anoop C Nair, Head of HR at Indel Money, said the changes bring faster access, digital efficiency, and long-term retirement safeguards. While concerns remain around unemployment-linked withdrawal limits, the reforms are positioned as a balance between short-term needs and retirement security.
A recent Economic Times report highlights how choosing the right gold loan repayment method can significantly reduce the overall cost for borrowers. While gold loans are widely used for their quick disbursal and lower interest rates, repayment structure plays a major role in how much interest a customer finally pays.
The article explains three common gold loan repayment options—regular EMI, bullet repayment, and overdraft-style repayment. EMI-based repayment suits borrowers with steady monthly income, as both principal and interest are paid in fixed instalments. Bullet repayment allows customers to pay interest periodically or at maturity, with the principal settled at the end, making it useful for short-term needs. The overdraft method offers higher flexibility, as interest is charged only on the amount utilised, helping disciplined borrowers lower interest outgo.
The report advises borrowers to assess cash flow, income stability, and loan tenure before choosing a repayment plan. Paying interest on time and reducing principal early can also bring down the total cost.
For institutions like Indel Money, transparent repayment options and customer awareness are essential to responsible lending. The article reinforces that informed repayment choices help borrowers manage gold loans better while protecting their pledged assets.

Technology has moved from the back office to the core of business strategy in the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector, according to KNC Nair, Chief Information Officer of Indel Money. In a recent interview, Nair highlighted how data and digital systems now play a decisive role in driving growth, managing risk, and building customer trust.
Nair noted that the role of the CIO has evolved significantly over the years. Once seen largely as a support function, the position has become a key business leadership role, closely aligned with operations, compliance, and long-term strategy.
Indel Money’s own transformation mirrors this shift. Originally a branch-led gold loan company, the NBFC has transitioned into a largely paperless, digital-first organisation. Today, the entire customer lifecycle—from onboarding and gold appraisal to loan servicing and closure—is handled through digital platforms. Customer identity verification is carried out using Aadhaar- and PAN-based eKYC, while almost all transactions are processed through banking channels, bringing cash usage down to near zero.
Regulatory compliance and data protection form a critical part of Indel Money’s digital framework. The company adheres to Reserve Bank of India guidelines and the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, supported by robust access controls, regular security audits, and systems that allow granular control of customer data.
Looking ahead, Indel Money is adopting a modern, API-driven technology architecture to enable co-lending models and partnerships with banks and other financial institutions. The company is also selectively deploying artificial intelligence across functions such as gold appraisal assistance, fraud detection, credit evaluation, and branch-level security.
According to Nair, technology at Indel Money is no longer a supporting layer but the foundation of the organisation’s operations. In a highly regulated financial environment, he said, digital systems are essential for ensuring trust, effective risk management, and sustainable business growth.
